Public Meeting on Marine Plastic Pollution Found in Cod from the Food Fishery
Bauline Community Center, Bauline East
Wednesday, January 11 @ 7-8pm

This past summer, researchers at MUN collected cod guts from fishermen during the food fishery to see if the fish are eating plastics. We revisited the wharves in Petty Harbour, Quidi Vidi, and St. Phillips-Portugal Cove that we visited last year, and extended further south (Witless Bay, Bauline East, and Brigus South). Thank you to all of the recreational and commercial fishermen who participated in the work! Last year, we found that only 2.4% of the fish had eaten plastics, one of the lowest recorded rates in the world. What about this year?

We are holding this open public meeting to share this year’s findings, receive feedback from attendees on how we might proceed in the future, and discuss concerns around plastic pollution in Newfoundland waters. Everyone is welcome.
Another public meeting will be held in the St. John’s area. Time and location will be announced in the coming days.

Bauline East is located off of the Southern Shore Highway (NL-10 S) approximately 45 minutes South of St. John’s (follow the signs for St. Michael’s and Burnt Cove). After leaving NL-10 S, follow the main road for approx. 5 minutes and the Bauline Community Center is on the right, just before the pond.
