What process can address the power dynamics that exist in all labs and research collaborations? How can we do everyday research differently, in ways that are more equitable, humble, and accountable?
Join CLEAR lab members and filmmakers from Couple3 as we launch episodes in a three-part series called “Lab Life” that takes people behind the scenes in CLEAR lab. We open the black box of what seem like mundane laboratory practices: choosing author order on papers (episode 1), choosing the values that guide the lab (episode 2), and how we run lab meetings (episode 3). The films show that these activities are far from mundane, but are the main vehicals for equity, humility, accountability, and the creation of a lab collective. Our goal: to do science differently, in ways that do not replicate existing power dynamics.
Each launch will include the screening of the ~12 minute film and conclude with a short discussion and longer Q&A with lab members and filmmakers.
Lab Life is funded by the MEOPAR Knowledge Mobilization Fund.
You can register here (unlimited free space for each event):
Episode 1: Author Order. How do we ensure that the process by which authors are credited on publications is not only transparent, but equitable and able to recognize the full range of labour that goes into scientific work?
Friday, March 19th, 1pm EDT.
This film is now posted on our website. Thank you to everyone who came out!

Episode 2: Choosing Lab Values. How do we choose which values and goals we align with as researchers? CLEAR is a marine plastic pollution laboratory best known for creating a lab culture and scientific methods that exemplify humility, equity, and good land relations. This ~12 minute film shows how we chose those values through storytelling, consensus, and deliberation.

Episode 3: Running a Lab meeting. Meetings can be brutal. Or they can enact humility and accountability. Lab meetings are often understood as the most fulfilling part of CLEAR lab membership that transforms lab members into a collective. This ~12 minute film shows how we run lab meetings so they fill us up, rather than drain us.
