The Nunalinni kamatsianik palastikkinik igitauKattatunik Nunatsiavummi / Community-Based Monitoring of plastic pollution in Nunatsiavut project is looking to hire an Inuit research assistant based in Nain, Nunatsiavut.

The person in this position would be supporting northern contaminants. Work with Liz Pijogge at the Nunatsiavut Research Centre (in-person) and to a lesser extent with Max Liboiron at Memorial University (remotely). All training will be provided: youth and people without previous research experience are invited to apply. All activities are done with others, but the applicant must be able to also work independently.

Full time (up to 30 or 35 hours a week) or part time (5-10 hours a week). Flexible start date, though we are looking to fill the position as soon as possible. End date: March 31, 2024. Renewable contract. Wage: $23-32/hr depending on experience (HR determination). This position is based in Nain at the Research Centre but the employer is Memorial University. Duties: 

• Support Liz and other Nunatsiavut Research Centre staff in daily operations, including community freezer work, sample collection, hosting visiting researchers, and coordinating shipments;

• Co-coordinate animal gut sample collection with hunters, fishers, and community freezers along the coast;

• Do on-the-land collection of water, shoreline plastics, and animal samples;

• Review and provide feedback on research analyses and reports;

• Coordinate and facilitate on-the-land workshops about plastics and/or wild food;

• Attend regular meetings with team members. 

Opportunities:

• Develop existing skills to support the research (for example, if you’re already good at photography, you can provide photography for the project, or if you’re learning Inuttitut you can work on translation related to research);

• Training in plastic pollution monitoring, and data management, as well as optional training in public speaking, research writing, and research reviews as well as other types of professional development offered by Memorial University;

• Travel to conferences, partner institutions, and to different parts of Nunatsiavut;
